A Brief History of Reiki
This is just a very short description about the history of Reiki and there are many books on the subject if you wish to delve deeper. When I first became interested in Reiki I found the following book very informative:
'An evidence Based History of Reiki by International Center for Reiki Training'
‘Rei’ – universal wisdom
‘ki’ – life force energy
The ancient healing tradition of Reiki was rediscovered in the 20th century by Dr Mikao Usui who spent his life learning how great teachers healed through touch, healing the sick.
After many years of travelling around the world, studying and meditation, Dr Mikao spent 21 days on Mount Kurama.
On the 21st day, a brilliant light struck his third eye, followed by golden Sanskrit symbols. He memorised these one by one and the symbols and the healing energy is what we now call Reiki – it is a Universal Life Force Energy.
Usui began to teach others and one of his students was Dr Hayashi, a naval commander. He taught Madam Takata who then brought Reiki to the West. The legacy from Dr Mikao Usui, Dr Hayashi and Madam Takata continues — from this lineage, Master to Master, Reiki has grown into the gentle, universal healing practice shared around the world today.
