A Brief History of Reiki
This is just a very short description about the history of Reiki and there are many books on the subject if you wish to delve deeper. When I first became interested in Reiki I found the following book very informative:
'An evidence Based History of Reiki by International Center for Reiki Training'

‘Rei’ – universal wisdom
‘ki’ – life force energy
The ancient healing tradition of Reiki was rediscovered in the 20th century by Dr Mikao Usui who spent his life learning how great teachers healed through touch, healing the sick.
After many years of travelling around the world, studying and meditation, Dr Mikao spent 21 days on Mount Kurama.
On the 21st day, a brilliant light struck his third eye, followed by golden Sanskrit symbols. He memorised these one by one and the symbols and the healing energy is what we now call Reiki – it is a Universal Life Force Energy.
Usui began to teach others and one of his students was Dr Hayashi, a naval commander. He taught Madam Takata who then brought Reiki to the West. The legacy from Dr Mikao Usui, Dr Hayashi and Madam Takata continues — from this lineage, Master to Master, Reiki has grown into the gentle, universal healing practice shared around the world today.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is the channelling of ‘universal life force energy’ by a practitioner who has learnt Reiki and gone through attunement processes from a Reiki Master.
Universal life force energy is a natural energy that originates from the universe and flows through all living things.
Dr Usui understood that we were a soul in a material body and he created hand positions for various places over the body for energy to enter the doorways in the energy system for the body to draw what it needs.
When the energy is flowing freely, the mind, body, spirit and emotions are all balanced and you feel well. However, when there are blockages, we can start to feel stressed, tired and unbalanced and we may have various symptoms that can make us feel unwell.
Reiki releases any energetic blockages and imbalances which supports the body to heal itself on all levels, relaxing, calming and balancing the energy system.
Although Reiki energy is ‘universal’ and based on ‘spiritual’ practice it is not connected to any religion and is therefore beneficial to anyone who needs support.
Reiki is a gentle support for many conditions treated by your GP or hospital. However, it is not an instead of conventional medics, medicine and treatments.
Anyone can learn Reiki for their own self-healing from a certified Reiki Master Practitioner.
Regular Reiki promotes an inner peace and balance within your mental, physical, emotional and spiritual being.
Reiki is 100% safe for adults, children, animals and nature.
Just be open to it and you will be amazed!
What Happens in a Reiki Session?
At the start of the Reiki session we will have a chat about how you are feeling and what you are hoping to get out of the Reiki healing etc.
We can light some candles and play soft music, have total silence or chat gently about the session as we go along. The session is yours to choose.
During the healing session (you are fully clothed) you will either sit comfortably in a chair or lie down, whichever you prefer. My hands are gently placed above or lightly on your body for the energy to begin flowing helping you to deeply relax.
You may feel peace, calm, tingling, warmth or a coolness. Each session brings something different to you as your body does its work depending on your needs.
